Luigi Boccherini and Cats in a Jewellery Box
Music Masters Luigi Boccherini- LIMITED EDITION ( only ten will be made ) Designed to fit wherever there might be a place for music in the dolls house, this modern miniature dummy board of the Classical composer and famous cellist Luigi Boccherini is based on the portrait of him by Pompeo Batoni. Boccherini, who was born in Italy but lived for most of his life in Spain, wrote a large amount of chamber music the most famous of which is probably the second movement of his string quintet Opus 13 No. 4 known as the minuet in G.He is credited with bringing the cello into a sharper focus than had hitherto been the fashion in the 18th century and wrote many fine concertos for his instrument. Cats in a Jewellery Box A lovely 19th century painting by Henriette Ronner-Knip was the inspiration for this dummy board figure depicting three kittens playing in an open jewellery box. It was common practice for dummy board artists to copy paintings or prints and many boards of this kind were made in the 19th century. Sadly we rarely know the name of the artist but in this case we do know that this lady was a very successful Dutch painter who specialised in cats and kittens. Her work is charming and fun and it is no surprise we find dummy board cats based on her work. This figure is in the collection of an English castle in private hands and probably dates to the 1930’s when work of this kind was very fashionable.
