Christmas TreeChristmas Tree

A very unusual German or possibly English dummy board from the early 20th century, showing a Christmas Tree all beutifully decorated with traditional things. Here we see the type of item brought over from Germany in the mid 19th century to decorate British homes. Many of them were made from dyed feathers- the original faux tree- and one of these is represented here as a dummy board. They would have been quite commonly seen as displays in shop windows and particularly in sweet and chocolate shops on the Continent at the end of the 19th century, though they never really took off in the U.K. This 4 ft. figure, is a very rare find and is privately owned in the U.S. where it is part of a larger collection of “Christmasabilia”. One can find modern reproduction dummy boards of trees, though not as beautiful as this one. for sale, particularly in America where dressing the home for the celebrations of Easter, Halloween and Christmas is big business. This figure would be perfect by the Victorian/ Edwardian Sitting room fireplace all decked out for the Festive Season.
